India, being part of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries, offers a large potential for global collaboration, both in trade and technology in composites applications. Composite material industry for BRIC is expected to be worth over US$ 27 billion by 2016. In 2011, the volume of composites output reached around 3 per cent of the worldwide volume – and about 6 per cent of Asian volume. The annual growth rate has been considerable since the last three years, projected to be around 18 per cent to 20 per cent every year.
The key driver of the composite market in India is relevance of composite products to the needs of the country. India is on the path to improve its infrastructure including automobiles, railways, mass transportation, roads, airports and housing, where the use of composites is evident. The energy sector is also looking for composite and advanced materials in production of windmills and high pressure pipes and fittings (for petroleum or gas). Governmental policies have a major role to play. Huge investments have been made and infrastructure programs are strongly backed by public subsidies.
Newer markets for composites in India
The three main sectors that are growing in India: Marine with +31 per cent expected growth, Wind Energy with +28 per cent, Railway with 20 per cent per year. The building and construction sector could go further in the use of composite materials. Another interesting application of composites is the rehabilitation of infrastructures such as bridges, cabling under constraints, old or historical buildings. The use of composites in aerospace and defence sectors have shown rapid technological developments. Extensive use of composites in applications such as rockets, satellites, missiles, light combat aircraft, advanced light helicopter and trainer air craft reinstates that India is at par with the advanced countries in the development and use of composites in this area.
Composed of environment friendly resins and reinforcements, Bio-composites are very efficient for applications that do not require high resistance. In construction, they can be used in building interiors and decoration. An emerging interest could be the development of a new texture and new touch to construction materials. This is a new field to be increasingly explored by architects and designers.
